Most pregnant women are plagued with skin-related problems particularly acne in the first trimester. Those who have had a history of acne outbreaks are most likely to experience this skin issue when they are pregnant. This happens because the hormone levels in pregnant women increase, which lead your skin to manufacture more oil.

There are several safe natural as well as manufactured solutions that can help you clear up your skin. Before using any acne skin care product, however, make sure you consult your obstetrician.

Acne care products that contain benzoyl peroxide are safe for use by pregnant women. However, be careful about products that contain a common anti-acne ingredient, salicyclic acid. This is not recommended for use by pregnant women. The topical use of salicyclic acid has not been tested but it is known to cause birth defects if taken orally. Keep away from acne remedies that contain vitamin A or retinoid, which is another form of vitamin A.

High doses of vitamin A are not recommended for unborn children. Oral acne treatments like Accutane have been reported to cause birth defects. Avoid using products that contain tetracycline, doxycycline, and minocycline. These can sometimes lead to bone and teeth defects in fetuses.

There are however several home-based remedies that can help you treat your acne safely. Start by keeping your skin as squeaky clean as possible. You can apply a facial mask made of lukewarm, cooked oatmeal once a day and keep it on for about 20 minutes. This helps to clear up your acne in just a few days time. You can also apply the half of a lemon to a blemish to lighten it. Rinse off the lemon after about 10 minutes. Most essential oils are safe for use during pregnancy. Tea tree and lavender oils have been tested and proven to be harmless.

Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. Apples and blueberries are said to be great for preventing outbreaks of pimples.

Remember not to prick your pimples or pop them as they are likely to leave behind scars. If you use a moisturizer, opt for one that is oil-free. If you are using make-up, make sure it is water-based and not oil-based. Make sure you cleanse your skin thoroughly off all make-up before going to bed. Avoid using a washcloth to scrub your face. Use your hands to wash your face gently.
